John Bancroft was born in Lancashire, England, in 1802 and emigrated with his family to the Delaware Valley in 1822. With his father and brother, Samuel, he established a woolen mill near Brandywine Bridge in Wilmington, Del. They relocated to Upper Providence Township, Pa., in 1827 and to Todmorden Mills in Nether Providence Township in 1831.
